Undergraduate Scholarships

The International Education Fund (IEF) Scholarship is a competitive scholarship offered to UT Dallas students who are participating in an approved International Education program and meet the eligibility criteria.  Applicants must have a UTD cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75.

• Award range: $500-5000
• Deadlines: March 15 for fall programs, October 15 for spring programs, December 15 for summer programs

Most financial aid and scholarships are applicable to International Education programs, but you should work with the Office of Financial Aid to ensure your funding can be applied to the program you have chosen.  Make an appointment to meet with your financial aid advisor and discuss your specific funding.  For questions to ask, visit the Discuss Your Finances webpage.

EPPS

Global Engagement Scholarship supports undergraduate students in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences (EPPS) at UT Dallas as they study abroad. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents and full-time undergraduate students in EPPS with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Applicants must be enrolled in a UT Dallas course with a study abroad component or enrolled in a study abroad program that transfers credit back to UT Dallas during the semester the student receives the Global Engagement Scholarship.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants support undergraduate members of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society who have applied or been accepted into a study abroad program.  Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher.

The Ashley Soule Conroy Foundation Scholarship provides funding to 1-3 U.S. college students each term who intend to study abroad during a fall or spring semester.  In order to be eligible, applicants must be participating in a study abroad program that lasts at least 14 weeks and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.

• Deadlines: June 1 for fall programs, October 1 for spring programs

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, congressionally funded and offered by the U.S. Department of State, provides support for students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad.  In order to be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens receiving a Federal Pell Grant and applying to a credit-bearing study/intern abroad program that lasts at least three weeks.

Critical Need Language Awards are supplemental funds offered to a limited number of Gilman scholars each year.  These awards are offered to Gilman Scholarship applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad.  These include Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bahasa Indonesian, Bangla, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. To apply, students should complete the Gilman Scholarship application.

Boren Scholarships, funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), provide support to U.S. undergraduate students who plan to study abroad in world regions considered critical to U.S. interests.  The Boren Awards give preference to programs based on their duration, focus on intensive study of a preferred language in a preferred country, and the applicant’s field of study.  For a list of preferences, visit the Eligible Program webpage.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program, offered by the U.S. Department of State, is a summer study abroad opportunity for U.S. students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world.  Scholarship recipients will spend 8-10 weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages and participating in structured cultural enrichment experiences.  Critical languages include Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu.

• Award: most costs associated with the program, excluding passport fees and the cost of a medical screening

Diversity Abroad Overseas Ambassador Scholarships provide funding to students who commit to serving as overseas correspondents while studying or interning abroad.  Recipients will be asked to share their experiences by writing articles and sharing inspiring photos and videos.  Economically disadvantaged students, first-generation students, students with disabilities, and ethnically/racially diverse students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Qualifying study abroad programs must be a minimum of 8 weeks in length and take place in one of the following countries: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam.

Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) Scholarships provide funding to support students who are underrepresented among the U.S. study abroad population. FEA offers a range of scholarships that make international experiences more accessible to minority, community college, and first-generation students. Applicants will submit one generic FEA scholarship application in order to be considered for all relevant individual scholarships.

The Gilman-McCain Scholarship Program, congressionally funded and offered by the U.S. Department of State, provides support for undergraduate child dependents of active duty military member(s) to study or intern abroad.  In order to be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens receiving any type of Title IV federal financial aid and applying to a credit-bearing study/intern abroad program that lasts at least three weeks.

The Joan Nelson Study Abroad Scholarship supports undergraduate members of the Golden Key Honor Society who have applied or have been accepted into a credit-bearing study abroad program.

The Diverse International Women of Color Scholarship is intended to assist women of color who are exceptional in their studies and in need of financial assistance to study abroad.  In order to be eligible,applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7.  Only study abroad programs starting in June, July, or August will be considered.

The Jan Kieling Rainbow Scholarship, offered by Fund for Education Abroad (FEA), supports LGBTQI students who plan to participate in a high-quality, rigorous academic program abroad for at least 4 weeks (28 days).  To apply, students should complete the generic FEA scholarship application.

The June Jordan Joy Fund provides financial support to Black women who have been accepted to a study abroad program.  The fund is focused on expanding access to women who normally wouldn’t have the funds necessary to go abroad.  Commuter students, non-traditional students, and students with a cumulative grade point average under 3.0 are especially encouraged to apply.

The NAFSA Tamara H. Bryant Memorial Scholarship, offered by Fund for Education Abroad (FEA), supports African-American undergraduate students who plan to study abroad for at least 4 weeks (28 days) and who also embody Mrs. Bryant’s spirit of resilience and commitment to intercultural exchange.  To apply, students should complete the generic FEA scholarship application.

STA Travel, Inc., a travel company focused on student and youth travel, teams up with a variety of partners to help make students’ study abroad dreams a reality.  Check the website frequently for updates.

The Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship, offered by travel backpack company Tortuga, provides funding to passionate students who want to explore the world.  Applicants must be applying to or accepted into a fall or spring study abroad program.  The scholarship is open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or international students currently studying in the US on a student visa.

The Foundation for Asia-Pacific Education offers scholarships to students planning to study abroad in several countries within the Asia Pacific region, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and more.  In order to be eligible, applicants must be U.S. or Canadian citizens.

The Asia Institute Global Business Scholarship provides funding to undergraduate students majoring in international business or a related field who intend to study abroad or intern in Asia.  In order to be eligible, applicants must have selected a global learning experience in a country different from their nationality and/or different from the country that issued their passport.

The Asia Institute International Engineering Scholarship provides funding to undergraduate students majoring in the field of engineering who intend to study abroad or intern in Asia.  In order to be eligible, applicants must have selected a global learning experience in a country different from their nationality and/or different from the country that issued their passport.

The Hilary Echo Douglas Memorial Scholarship, offered by Fund for Education Abroad (FEA), supports U.S. students planning to study abroad in Vietnam or within other Southeast Asian cultures for at least 4 weeks (28 days).  To apply, students should complete the generic FEA scholarship application.

US-Japan Bridging Scholarships offer funding to approximately 100 U.S. undergraduate students participating in study abroad programs in Japan each year. The scholarship is funded by private foundations and major U.S. corporations and is designed to assist students with travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or academic year.

Tanaka and Green Academic Scholarships, offered in association with the Japan-America Society of Washington DC, provides funding to U.S. undergraduate students who are accepted to participate in a semester exchange program in Japan. Priority is given to students who have studied the Japanese language, have taken courses related to Japanese history/culture, or have participated in extra-curricular activities related to Japan outside the classroom.

• Award range: $4000-5000

Toshizo Watanabe Study Abroad Scholarships, offered by the U.S.-Japan Council, provide financial assistance to undergraduate students participating in a semester or year-long study abroad program in Japan. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, and priority is given to first-generation college students and those without previous international travel experience.

The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) provides scholarships to qualified students who are accepted to participate in a semester exchange program in Japan. The host institution will select top-qualified students to apply for the JASSO scholarship.  In order to be eligible, applicants must demonstrate financial need; those receiving more than 80,000 JPY (approximately $750) in other scholarships are not eligible.

• Award: 80,000 JPY per month of study (approximately $750)

The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) Program is funded by the Korean Government and provides scholarships for qualified students who are accepted to participate in a semester exchange program in Korea. The host institution will select top-qualified students to apply for the GKS scholarship.  Selected students will be required to take at least one regular semester course related to Korean language or culture during their exchange program.

• Award: round-trip airfare, monthly stipend of KRW 500,000 for three months (approximately $400/month), one-time allowance of KRW 200,000 (approximately $150)

Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst/German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) maintains a database of scholarships and funding for undergraduate students who plan to study, research, or intern in Germany.

The Gilman for France Scholarship, a shared initiative by both the Government of the United States of America and the French Government, provides funding to U.S. undergraduate students who plan on studying abroad in France for at least three weeks.  To apply, students should complete the generic Gilman Scholarship application.

The Cyril Taylor Memorial Scholarship for Study in the UK, offered by Fund for Education Abroad (FEA), supports U.S. students planning to study abroad in the United Kingdom for at least 4 weeks (28 days).  To apply, students should complete the generic FEA scholarship application.

British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX) Scholarships are awarded to students studying abroad for either a semester or for an entire academic year at an affiliated institution in the United Kingdom.  Applicable Education Abroad programs include the University of East Anglia, University of Liverpool, University of Reading, and University of Sheffield.

The AASAP/UK Lord Acton Memorial Scholarship provides funding to undergraduate students accepted into an approved semester-long study abroad program in the United Kingdom.  Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and be willing to share about their study abroad experience.

Eastern European Study Abroad Scholarships are offered to students planning to study abroad for a semester or full academic year in an Eastern European country.

• Award range: $100-7000

ItaliaRail Scholarships offer funding to help students study abroad in Italy and immerse themselves in the country’s rich and dynamic culture.  In order to be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in a study abroad program for a full semester (12-16 weeks).

• Award: $1,000, plus a 3-day Italy Rail Pass

The A. Rewari Family Scholarship for Study Abroad in Denmark, a scholarship offered by Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) supports a U.S. student planning to study abroad in Denmark for at least 4 weeks (28 days).  To apply, students should complete the generic FEA scholarship application.

Upper Midwest Rebild Scholarships (UMRSC) are awarded to U.S. citizens and permanent residents enrolled at a U.S. college or university and accepted into a study abroad program in Denmark.  Recipients are expected to learn about Danish culture, arts, heritage, or language during their study period.

Generation Study Abroad (GSA) Excellence and Travel Awards provide funding to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have been accepted to study abroad at a university, institute of technology, or polytechnic in New Zealand.

The Foundation for Asia-Pacific Education offers scholarships to students planning to study abroad in several countries within the Asia Pacific region, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and more.  In order to be eligible, applicants must be U.S. or Canadian citizens.

The Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) awards up to 100 scholarships per year to encourage students to choose Turkey as a study abroad destination. In order to be eligible, applicants must identify with at least one of the following backgrounds: African American, Armenian American, Bosnian American, Filipino American, Hispanic American, Macedonian American, Native American.

• Award range: $500-2000
• Deadline: scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis

Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) – Students accepted into this exchange program may be eligible for the Global Exchange Scholarship (GES) of 500,000 KRW (approximately $400).  UT Dallas students nominated to HUFS will be automatically considered for the GES; no additional application is required.  Upon arrival in Korea, exchange students can also apply for the Peer Tutoring Scholarship of 500,000 KRW (approximately $400). If selected as a tutor, recipients will meet with Korean students once per week to share their language and culture.

Istanbul Kültür University – Students accepted into this exchange program may be eligible to apply for a scholarship program through the Erasmus KA107 Project, which is funded through the European Commission. The Erasmus+ Grant is €800/month (approximately $850/month) and €1100 (approximately $1200) to cover the flight cost from UTD to IKU.

University of Economics in Bratislava – Students accepted into this exchange program may be eligible for the National Scholarship Programme of the Slovak Republic. The scholarship is intended for master’s level students or those who have completed at least 2.5 years of their university studies at the time of application.  Recipients will be awarded a monthly living stipend of €400 (approximately $450/month).

University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) – Students accepted into this exchange program may be eligible for the following scholarships:

• UNNC Mobility Scholarship with variable award amounts (up to RMB 650,000 or approximately $100,000)
• Ningbo Government Scholarship of RMB 6,000 (approximately $900)

University of Sheffield – Students accepted into this exchange program may be eligible to apply for a competitive scholarship of £750 (approximately $950), funded by Sheffield’s American alumni.
