Application Steps
Specific application requirements may vary by program, but here are the general steps you will need to complete when applying for an International Education program:
Step 1
Discover Programs
Use Program Discovery search tool on the Comets Abroad portal to explore program options. If you need assistance, meet with the Office of International Education to find a program based on your interests, needs, and goals.
Step 2
Start an Application
Navigate to the program you’ve chosen and find the “Apply Now” button. After clicking “Apply Now,” follow these steps to login to the Comets Abroad portal:
- Click “OK” on the pop-up notification
- Select “I have a NetID and password” and click “Submit”
- Enter your UTD NetID and password
- Click “Login”
- Select the term you’re applying to and click “Apply”
- Note: If the term you want is not listed, refer to the Important Dates webpage to make sure the application is open and the deadline hasn’t passed.
Step 3
Complete the Initial Checklist
Application requirements may vary, but typically include:
- Statement of purpose (essay for exchange programs)
- Digital signature documents
- Reading material containing important information
Certain programs may also require an online recommendation from your academic advisor, or a copy of your resume.
Step 4
After Acceptance
Complete your second application checklist, which typically includes:
- Copy of your passport
- NOTE: Be sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months past the end date of your program.
- Proof of program acceptance
- If you are participating in an exchange program, you still need to apply directly to your host institution.
- If you are participating in an affiliated program, you still need to apply directly to your program provider.
- Attend a pre-departure orientation
- Submit your course articulation/registration form (if required for your program):
To prepare for your time abroad, refer to the Final Pre-Departure Checklist.
Step 5
While Abroad
If participating on an exchange or affiliated partner program, within 2 weeks of your program start date upload your Verification of Enrollment Abroad form (VEA). If you are enrolled in any courses not listed on your FCAF, you will need to add those courses to your FCAF and get them approved by the corresponding ADU.
Find ways to reflect on your experiences (blog, journal, video diary, etc.) and contact OIE@utdallas.edu if you need support during your time abroad. Report any changes to your foreign address or phone number in the Comets Abroad portal.
