Graduate Scholarships

The International Education Fund (IEF) Scholarship is a competitive scholarship offered to UT Dallas students who are participating in an International Education program and meet the eligibility criteria.  Applicants must have a UTD cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75.

• Deadlines: June 15 for fall programs, October 15 for spring programs, March 15 for summer programs

Most financial aid and scholarships are applicable to International Education programs, but you should work with the Office of Financial Aid to ensure your funding can be applied to the program you have chosen.  Make an appointment to meet with your financial aid advisor and discuss your specific funding.  For questions to ask, visit the Discuss Your Finances webpage.

Some academic units offer their own study abroad scholarships and/or travel grants. For example, JSOM students may be eligible for the JSOM Study Abroad Scholarship, and EPPS students may apply for the James Scott International Experiences Fund. Check with your academic advisor to see if departmental funds are available.

Boren Fellowships, funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), provide support to U.S. graduate students who plan to study or research abroad in world regions considered critical to U.S. interests.  The Boren Awards give preference to programs based on their duration, focus on intensive study of a preferred language in a preferred country, and the applicant’s field of study.  For a list of preferences, visit the Eligible Programs webpage.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program, offered by the U.S. Department of State, is a summer study abroad opportunity for U.S. students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world.  Scholarship recipients will spend 8-10 weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages and participating in structured cultural enrichment experiences.  Critical languages include Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu.

Diversity Abroad Overseas Ambassador Scholarships provide funding to students who commit to serving as overseas correspondents while studying or interning abroad.  Recipients will be asked to share their experiences by writing articles and sharing inspiring photos and videos.  Economically disadvantaged students, first-generation students, students with disabilities, and ethnically/racially diverse students are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program, a congressionally-funded international exchange program, provides grants for graduate students to undertake international study, advanced research, university teaching, and primary/secondary school teaching worldwide. The program currently awards approximately 2,000 grants annually in all fields of study and operates in more than 140 countries around the world.

The Diverse International Women of Color Scholarship is intended to assist women of color who are exceptional in their studies and in need of financial assistance to study abroad.  In order to be eligible,applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7.  Only study abroad programs starting in June, July, or August will be considered.

The June Jordan Joy Fund provides financial support to Black women who have been accepted to a study abroad program.  The fund is focused on expanding access to women who normally wouldn’t have the funds necessary to go abroad.  Commuter students, non-traditional students, and students with a cumulative grade point average under 3.0 are especially encouraged to apply.

STA Travel, Inc., a travel company focused on student and youth travel, teams up with a variety of partners to help make students’ study abroad dreams a reality.  Check the website frequently for updates.

The Foundation for Asia-Pacific Education offers scholarships to students planning to study abroad in several countries within the Asia Pacific region, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and more.  In order to be eligible, applicants must be U.S. or Canadian citizens.

• Award range: $500-1500
• Deadlines: August 1 for fall programs, December 31 for spring programs, April 30 for summer programs

The Asia Institute Global Business Scholarship provides funding to graduate students in international business or a related field who intend to study abroad or intern in Asia.  In order to be eligible, applicants must have selected a global learning experience in a country different from their nationality and/or different from the country that issued their passport.

The Asia Institute International Engineering Scholarship provides funding to graduate students in the field of engineering who intend to study abroad or intern in Asia.  In order to be eligible, applicants must have selected a global learning experience in a country different from their nationality and/or different from the country that issued their passport.

Tanaka and Green Academic Scholarships, offered in association with the Japan-America Society of Washington DC, provides funding to U.S. graduate students who are accepted to participate in a semester exchange program in Japan. Priority is given to students who have studied the Japanese language, have taken courses related to Japanese history/culture, or have participated in extra-curricular activities related to Japan outside the classroom.

Toshizo Watanabe Study Abroad Scholarships, offered by the U.S.-Japan Council, provide financial assistance to graduate students participating in a semester or year-long study abroad program in Japan. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, and priority is given to first-generation college students and those without previous international travel experience.

The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) provides scholarships to qualified students who are accepted to participate in a semester exchange program in Japan. The host institution will select top-qualified students to apply for the JASSO scholarship.  In order to be eligible, applicants must demonstrate financial need; those receiving more than 80,000 JPY (approximately $750) in other scholarships are not eligible.

• Award: 80,000 JPY per month of study (approximately $750)

The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) Program is funded by the Korean Government and provides scholarships for qualified students who are accepted to participate in a semester exchange program in Korea. The host institution will select top-qualified students to apply for the GKS scholarship.  Selected students will be required to take at least one regular semester course related to Korean language or culture during their exchange program.

• Award: round-trip airfare, monthly stipend of KRW 500,000 for three months (approximately $400/month), one-time allowance of KRW 200,000 (approximately $150)

Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst/German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) maintains a database of scholarships and funding for graduate students who plan to study, research, or intern in Germany.

Eastern European Study Abroad Scholarships are offered to students planning to study abroad for a semester or full academic year in an Eastern European country.

• Award range: $100-7000
• Deadlines: March for fall programs, October for spring programs, April for summer programs

ItaliaRail Scholarships offer funding to help students study abroad in Italy and immerse themselves in the country’s rich and dynamic culture.  In order to be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in a study abroad program for a full semester (12-16 weeks).

• Award: $1,000, plus a 3-day Italy Rail Pass
• Deadlines: June for fall programs, November for spring programs

Generation Study Abroad (GSA) Excellence and Travel Awards provide funding to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have been accepted to study abroad at a university, institute of technology, or polytechnic in New Zealand.

The Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) awards up to 100 scholarships per year to encourage students to choose Turkey as a study abroad destination. In order to be eligible, applicants must identify with at least one of the following backgrounds: African American, Armenian American, Bosnian American, Filipino American, Hispanic American, Macedonian American, Native American.

• Deadline: scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis

Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) – Students accepted into this exchange program may be eligible for the Global Exchange Scholarship (GES) of 500,000 KRW (approximately $400).  UT Dallas students nominated to HUFS will be automatically considered for the GES; no additional application is required.  Upon arrival in Korea, exchange students can also apply for the Peer Tutoring Scholarship of 500,000 KRW (approximately $400). If selected as a tutor, recipients will meet with Korean students once per week to share their language and culture.

Istanbul Kültür University – Students accepted into this exchange program may be eligible to apply for a scholarship program through the Erasmus KA107 Project, which is funded through the European Commission. The Erasmus+ Grant is €800/month (approximately $850/month) and €1100 (approximately $1200) to cover the flight cost from UTD to IKU.

University of Economics in Bratislava – Students accepted into this exchange program may be eligible for the National Scholarship Programme of the Slovak Republic. The scholarship is intended for master’s level students or those who have completed at least 2.5 years of their university studies at the time of application.  Recipients will be awarded a monthly living stipend of €400 (approximately $450/month).

University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) – Students accepted into this exchange program may be eligible for the following scholarships:

• UNNC Mobility Scholarship with variable award amounts (up to RMB 650,000 or approximately $100,000)
• Ningbo Government Scholarship of RMB 6,000 (approximately $900)

University of Sheffield – Students accepted into this exchange program may be eligible to apply for a competitive scholarship of £750 (approximately $950), funded by Sheffield’s American alumni.
