Security
- Heavy fighting in Sudan’s capital as food aid needs grow (Reuters). Heavy air strikes pounded southern areas of Sudan’s capital on Thursday as clashes flared near a military camp, witnesses said, in fighting that has displaced nearly 1 million people and left residents of Khartoum struggling to survive.
- ‘Bandits’ Kill More in Chad (VOA). At least eleven villagers in southern Chad have been killed by “bandits,” in a region troubled by violence between herders and sedentary farmers, the military said on Thursday.
- Nigeria: at least 30 killed in herder-farmer clashes (Africa News). More than 30 people have been killed in clashes between herders and farmers in central Nigeria’s Plateau State, a local official said Tuesday (May. 16).
- El Salvador forces surround town in north after police killing (Reuters). El Salvador has deployed at least 5,000 soldiers and 500 police to surround a town in the northwest of the country in a push to arrest those responsible for the suspected gang killing of a police officer, President Nayib Bukele said on Wednesday.
Demonstrations
- Guinea’s junta requisitions army in face of protests, threatens to apply anti-terrorism law (Africa News). The ruling junta in Guinea commandeered the army on Wednesday in the face of fresh opposition protests, and threatened to apply anti-terrorism laws providing for up to life imprisonment against those responsible for a “crisis situation”.
- Israel deploys heavy police presence ahead of contentious Jerusalem march (AP). Israel deployed over 2,000 police on Thursday for a march by flag-waving Jewish nationalists through the main Palestinian thoroughfare in Jerusalem’s Old City, a contentious event that comes as tensions are already running high.
- Pakistan police surround Imran Khan’s home seeking protest suspects (The Guardian). Police on Thursday surrounded the home of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan as they accused him of harboring suspects wanted in violent protests that followed his arrest earlier this month.
Natural Disasters
- Almost 250,000 flee floods in Somali city that ‘became like an ocean’ (Reuters). Floods have caused almost a quarter of a million people to flee their homes.
Infrastructure
- Eskom: Dark, Chilly Winter Ahead (VOA). South Africa’s state power utility Eskom may have to increase power cuts to an unprecedented level this winter, a company executive said on Thursday, as the country grapples with its worst power crisis on record.
