World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United StatesCanada, the UKNew Zealand, and Australia, and the CDCECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Environment

  • Madagascar – Tropical cyclone GAMANE (ERCC). Tropical cyclone GAMANE is crossing northern Madagascar weakening, and on 28 March at 0.00 (UTC), its centre was located inland over the Andapa District area, Sava Region with maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h (tropical depression). 
  • Mexico – Wildfires (ERCC). Several wildfires have been burning across Mexico since 15 March, causing casualties and damage. The major ongoing active fire is across Guerrero and Mexico States, and according to the JRC Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS), this wildfires has burnt an area of approximately 9,100 ha. 
  • Brazil – Floods and landslides (ERCC). The number of casualties and damage continues to rise, following the heavy rainfall that has been affecting south-eastern Brazil, causing floods and triggering landslides. 

Health

  • Level 2 – Yellow Fever in Nigeria (CDC). Yellow fever cases remain elevated in Nigeria, after an outbreak was first reported in November 2020. Travelers to Nigeria should take steps to prevent yellow fever by getting vaccinated at least 10 days before travel and taking steps to prevent mosquito bites.
