Natural Disasters

  • Ecuador – Floods, update (ERCC). The number of evacuated and affected people has been increasing following torrential rain and floods that hit the Province of Esmeraldas in north-western Ecuador in the past few days. At least six rivers overflowed across the cantons of Atacames, Esmeraldas, Quinindé and Muisne, all in the same Province.
  • Haiti – Severe weather and earthquake (ERCC). Heavy rainfall and strong winds, also due to the passage of the tropical storm ARLENE over the Gulf of Mexico affected most of Haiti on 2-3 June, causing floods and landslides that resulted in an increased number of casualties.
  • India – Snow avalanche (ERCC). A snow avalanche occurred in Chamoli District (northern Uttarakhand State, northern India), resulting in casualties.
  • Türkiye – Floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall has been affecting northern Türkiye, in particular throughout the Black Sea region since 4 June, causing floods, landslides and rivers overflow that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • Algeria – Floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall has been affecting northern Algeria, in particular the Saïda and Laghouat Provinces since early June, causing floods that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • Indonesia braces for forest fires, crop loss from severe dry season (Reuters on MSN.com). Indonesia is expecting a severe dry season from the impact of the El Nino weather pattern, threatening harvests and raising the risks of forest fires, the head of its weather agency said on Tuesday.
  • Philippines Raises Mayon Volcano’s Alert on ‘Increasing Unrest’ (Bloomberg L.P.). The Philippines on Monday raised the alert level on Mayon Volcano south of Manila due to “increasing unrest,” and advised the public to stay out of its six-kilometer radius danger zone.

Health

  • Gonorrhea, syphilis cases in UK hit new highs (CIDRAP). Gonorrhea infections rose 50% in 2022 compared with 2021, and infectious syphilis diagnoses increased 15%. HSA officials say the numbers partly reflect an increase in testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)—sexual health screenings rose by 13.4% in 2022—but note that the scale of the increase in gonorrhea and syphilis diagnoses “strongly suggests” more transmission within the population. The agency says all sexual encounters with new or casual partners should involve a condom and regular testing. HSA says the growing threat of untreatable gonorrhea makes it vital to get tested early to prevent transmission.
  • Study finds 27% rate of long COVID in infected health workers (CIDRAP). Multiple COVID-19 infections were predictive of developing long COVID.
