  • At least 15 people killed and dozens injured in bus crash in Mali (ABC). Mali’s government says that at least 15 people were killed and dozens injured when two passenger buses collided with a truck carrying livestock. While traffic accidents are common in Mali, especially during the rainy season, this is the worst in the West African nation this year, the government said. More than 680 people were killed last year in road accidents and some 8,200 were injured.

Natural Disasters

  • India, Pakistan – Tropical Cyclone BIPARJOY, update (ERCC). The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) BIPARJOY is set to make landfall near the Jakhau port in Gujarat’s Kutch district late evening of 15 June, with winds up to 150 km/h, according to the Indian Meteorological Department. Landfall is forecast to bring the region a triple threat of heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal storm surges.
  • Guatemala – Severe weather (ERCC). Since the start of the rainy season (from May 2023), more than 165,000 people have been affected across the country as reported by The National Coordination for Disaster Reduction (CONRED).
  • Pakistan – Severe weather, update (ERCC). The humanitarian impact increased following the heavy rainfall and strong winds that affected several Dostricts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab Provinces in north-western Pakistan since 10 June.
  • Philippines – Volcanic unrest, update (ERCC). The state of unrest of the Mayon volcano in the central Philippines is still ongoing. In the past 24 hours, two volcanic earthquakes have been recorded, a very slow effusion of lava from the summit of the crater and steam-laden plumes that rose 700 m. The alert level of the volcano stands at 3 which means that the volcano is currently in a relatively high level of unrest as magma is at the crater and hazardous eruption is possible within weeks or even days.

Health

  • 2 Americans found dead at hotel in Mexico’s Baja California Sur (AP News). Police in a seaside community on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula said Wednesday that two Americans have been found dead in their hotel room. The suspected cause of death was inhalation of gas. There have been several cases of such deaths in Mexico due to poisoning by carbon monoxide or other gases. Such gases are often produced by improperly vented or leaky water heaters and stoves.
