Assessing Destination Risks

When traveling abroad on behalf of UT Dallas, it is crucial to assess the risks associated with your destination country. This guide outlines practical steps and resources to help you effectively evaluate these risks. 

Follow UTD policies and guidelines for International travel  

Assess Risks 

  1. Check Travel Advisories – Visit the DOS website and select your destination to view the latest advisory.This will inform you about the current safety situation and any travel restrictions. 
  2. Review Health Notices – On the CDC website, enter your destination to see relevant health notices, including necessary vaccinations and health risks. 
  3. Consider Personal Safety Factors – If you belong to a vulnerable group (e.g., women, LGBTQ+, ethnic minorities), seek specialized safety tips. UTD travelers can get a pre-departure risk review from the International On Call team of security experts, who offer analysis on risks that exist in the region, local expertise and preventative advice. 
  4. Evaluate Road Safety – Investigate local transportation options and road safety. Plan to choose safe modes of transportation. Avoid hailing taxis from the street, use established taxi services, or established transportation and ride-sharing services if they are available. 
  5. Stay Updated with Current Events – Regularly check news outlets and official government resources for emerging risks or changes in the security environment. To get alerts for your destination, you can sign up in the STEP program and to the social media of the U.S. embassies, which you can get at the relevant U.S. Department of State country page  
  6. Talk with your Doctors about your upcoming trip – Schedule a consultation your doctors and inform them about your upcoming trip to discuss vaccinations, managing chronic conditions, and other health considerations relevant to your trip.   7. Prepare for Emergencies
    1. Familiarize yourself with local emergency contacts, including the nearest hospital, police station, and the U.S. embassy or consulate. which you can get at the U.S. Department of State country pages
    2. Create an emergency communications plan and keep it accessible. UTD travelers can use this template
