Program Types
Exchange Programs
Spend a semester at one of our partner institutions, while a student from the same institution comes to study at UT Dallas. You’ll pay tuition to UT Dallas and pay the host institution directly for housing and food, books, and other fees. The nomination process can be competitive; plan to apply 6-12 months before the start of your exchange semester.

- How to Apply: Click the “Apply for Exchange” button on your top choice program to start an application. Within the application, you can indicate your backup choices. Applications are reviewed on a competitive basis after the deadline.

Faculty-Led Programs
Interested in studying abroad with an entire group of UT Dallas students? Faculty-led programs are UT Dallas courses, taught by UTD faculty, with an international learning component. Some programs have class meetings on campus throughout the semester with 7-10 days spent abroad, while others are taught entirely abroad over a 4-5 week period.

- How to Apply: Click the “Apply Now” button on any of the program brochures. Once you complete the application checklist, the faculty leader or sponsoring department will review your application and determine your eligibility to participate.

Program Terms
Wintermester: Wintermester courses are tied to the fall semester, are three or four-credit hours courses, and have a two-week travel component directly after fall final exams. Students will meet for the class before the travel period to fulfill the necessary contact hours. Course registration for wintermester courses are included in fall tuition costs.
Maymester: Maymester courses are tied to the spring semester, are three or four-credit hours courses, and have a two-week travel component directly after spring final exams. Students will meet for the class before the travel period to fulfill the necessary contact hours. Course registration for maymester courses are included in spring tuition costs.
For most students, this means there is no additional tuition cost to participate in a Wintermester or Maymester program for full time students, (12 credit hours). Part time students will incur additional tuition costs for enrollment below 12 credit hours.
Summer: Summer courses are taught abroad for 5-6 weeks, depending on the program. Students apply for the summer program, register for the summer semester, incur in summer tuition, and take the courses during the summer for a total of six credit hours.

Affiliated Partner Programs
Spend a semester or summer studying abroad with a UTD-approved partner university or affiliated program provider. You’ll pay tuition, housing, and most other fees directly to the program provider. A wide variety of programs are available: You can study tropical marine biology in Australia, traditional medicine in China, renewable energy in Iceland, and more.

- How to Apply: Click the “Apply Now” button on any of the program brochures to start the OIE application. You will also need to apply directly to the affiliate provider. Applications are typically reviewed on a rolling basis.

Internships
Are you interested in gaining professional experience in a global setting? Browse international internship opportunities online through The Intern Group, Global Experiences, or report your own. Once you’ve received an internship offer, you’ll need to start an application in the Comets Abroad Portal and report your internship for departmental approval.

- How to Apply: Apply through the Comets Abroad portal by applying to your internship program or clicking the “Report Your Own Internship” button to start the OIE application. You will also need to report your internship for departmental approval:
- JSOM students will report their internship via Orion.
- Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science students should contact the Jonsson Career Services (JCS) Office.
- All other students should report their internship in Handshake, after reviewing eligibility on the University Career Center website.

Independent Study
An independent study is academic work that typically occurs outside the regular classroom structure. Examples of previous independent studies include: cross-cultural comparisons of global healthcare, research in accelerator hardware, international political economy of South Africa, character animation, documentary on Muslim-Mexican identity, and classical guitar in Spain. Students are responsible for identifying a UT Dallas professor who can supervise their coursework and serve as the instructor for their independent study course.

- How to Apply: Click the “Apply Now” button on the Independent Study program brochure to start the OIE application. You should also meet with your academic advisor to review where an independent study course can fit within your degree plan and to identify professors who can supervise independent studies in your department.

Non-Credit
Non-credit academic research includes any academic work that is funded with scholarships or other UT Dallas funding but does not earn credit. Examples may include dissertation research, non-credit language immersion, or service learning opportunities. Approval by the funding department is required as part of the application.
